Welcome to the Department of Mathematical Sciences
The Department of Mathematical Sciences was established in 1888 and
became a part of the College of Arts and Sciences in 1936. An undergraduate
degree in mathematics was offered in 1936, a master's degree in mathematics
in 1947 and a doctorate degree in 1956. The department has 29 professors
and 10 college track faculty.
The department is housed in two adjacent buildings:
Science Hall (SH), built in 1987, and Walden Hall (WH), built in 1966
and renovated in 1987. Three networked computer labs are housed in these
buildings: WH27, SH118, and SH221/222. WH27 is a proctored undergraduate
lab; SH118 is an open lab with 35 computers; and, SH221/222 are labs
for graduate students. The computers have Windows XP, Maple, Mathlab,
Scientific Workplace, and the Microsoft Office Suite. A department specific
login name is required.
The science and mathematics collections are housed
in Branson Library, across the street from Science Hall. In addition,
a mathematics reading room in Science Hall contains frequently used
advanced monographs as well as recent and current issues of journals.
The deparment has a UNIX network with workstations being served from
several other workstations/servers and a WINDOWS network being served
by three servers.
